Neonatal period defines the first 3 weeks of life after birth. Birth weight is the major determinants of neonatal mortality and seventy-three percent of the 10.6 million child deaths worldwide each year are the result of six causes: pneumonia, diarrhea, malaria, neonatal sepsis, preterm delivery and asphyxia at birth. It is therefore imporatnt to address the issue of deaths in the neonatal period, primarily due to preterm delivery, sepsis or pneumonia and birth asphyxia.
Responsibilities of a Neonatologist include the following:
- Diagnose newborns
- Treat Newborns with Special Health Conditions
- Manage Care for Newborns
- Provide Care During or After a High-Risk Birth
